Preschool Classroom Visit

Preschool Classroom Visit

Some time ago I had the privilege of visiting our local Head Start to talk to the preschoolers there about my jewelry. They had been doing a unit on different types of clothing, and I was asked to contribute a little bit by talking about accessories. I'm a big advocate of decorating your body the way that you want it, and it was fun to bring in my silliest pieces to show them. Like, I'm a full grown adult, and I wear earrings that are little PB&Js with faces on them. Jewelry is wearable art, and you get to choose whatever option you want to suit you!

I showed up with lots of different tools and earrings to pass around. Of course I needed to dress the part and look like a real artist, so I wore my apron. Was it convincing? Who knows. I had a slideshow prepared that showed different pictures of my process of making art. When I went to the slide with donuts, PB&Js, and waffles, I heard teeny tiny gasps! I don't know how much of the process of making art landed with them, but they sure loved the pictures of tiny food.

After I left, they they made their own shrinky-dink jewelry as a gift for someone they love. I got to see all of their artwork when I put the tiny necklaces together. At this age, they're still practicing how to hold pens and markers, and it was sweet to see the beginnings of drawing skills that I remembered from when my kids were their ages.

It has been a minute since I've been in a classroom, especially with little bitty 3 & 4 year olds. They were so well behaved, and such good listeners. I really enjoyed my time there and was so thrilled to see what wonderful work the teachers are doing for little ones in our community.
